Setting the Goal
Every design task begins by defining the end to be achieved —the goal of the design project, which is most often related to the action desired by the target audience. Is the purpose to invite an inquiry? To generate a purchase? To persuade the reader to a new point of view? Keeping the goal in mind and allowing it to determine the design.
Composition of the Message
The message is the most important element of any marketing piece as it informs the reader of the benefits of taking action. Using affecting behaviour is the result of explaining to the reader what to expect from the product or service i.e. “What’s in it for me?”. The message, therefore, should be reader-centered, clearly describing the enjoyment the reader will experience or the pain that will be relieved.

Choosing the Right Medium or Platform
Years ago, the only medium or platform available for marketing and advertising campaigns, was primarily via print media; however, in today’s technological environment, the options are almost endless. In most cases, a project’s purpose and message both determine the layout, which can sometimes be obvious, i.e. a business card or flyer/brochure, but with more than 9 million monthly users on Instagram (800 million world-wide) and over 2 billion active users on FaceBook, the potential of these mediums and platforms, can drastically increase people seeing your advertisement or marketing campaign. The ultimate choice of platform can determine the method of delivery to a specific target audience.
Further to the above process, we use a user-centred approach of design thinking. User-centred design is, by nature, an iterative process, so what we discover through user research and usability testing often dictates the way a project should proceed. Thus, design is a flexible and evolving process, not a codified method. Design Thinking is a design methodology (a body of knowledge comprising the principles, guidelines, best practices, methods, and processes relating to a particular discipline such as interaction design or user research)that provides a solution-based approach to solving problems, by understanding the human needs involved and by re-framing the problem in human-centric ways. Our approach to the design process covers 5 stages: Empathise, Define (the problem), Ideate, Prototype, and Test, a non-linear and flexible methodology where conduct more than one stage can and should be explored concurrently.
